THE cash-strapped Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality spent R1-million on three funerals and a memorial service last year.
Hundreds of thousands of rands were spent on loud-hailers, groceries, banners, posters and picture frames for the funerals of ANC councillors Phumeza Lose, Mxolisi Gumenge and Noncedo Ngqondi.
The three died when the minibus taxi they were travelling in overturned near Alexandria in January last year. They were returning to Port Elizabeth after attending a local government and public administration course at the University of Fort Hare campus in East London.
Documents pertaining to the costs of the funerals were never made public, but were leaked to The Herald last week.
