ON August 16 our family experienced the loss of our mother and applied for her death certificate through the undertakers taking care of the arrangements.
Upon receipt thereof, we noticed that the marital status reflected "married" even though she was widowed.
From recently published articles in The Herald, it was with much anxiety that I started the process of getting the marital status changed to widow through the Department of Home Affairs. The status affected my mom's estate as our dad had passed away in 2009.
On September 5 I contacted Vusumuzi Mkihize in Home Affairs (based in Pretoria), and explained the dilemma. On September 10, I received confirmation from Home Affairs advising that the error had been corrected and that I could collect the amended death certificate at the local offices.
I would like to thank all concerned in sorting out the error. All too often we hear of horror stories of incompetence, but would like to compliment home affairs for stellar service.
