WITH reference to "Know who real hooligan is" (September 16) according to Leon de Villiers of the DA being an emergency services worker in the fire department, I feel I have to raise serious issues about the Task implementation system and the general lack of management to look after its employees.
We as firefighters were promised back pay from as far back as 2009 for work done which we were not paid for.
If the current proposal of Task is implemented, that agreed money will fall away and we will only get back pay from August 1 this year.
As it won't be a substantial amount, I ask how much more are we as firefighters willing to take from the people that are in charge of us and who supposedly look after their employees. Instead they only look out for themselves.
The unions we belong to either have their own agenda for not taking our back pay query to management or they are there just there for self-gain.
We have two different factions of management where one looks out for firefighters interest from Uitenhage, and the other just looks out for themselves.
It seems we as firefighters have to do some serious introspection and think of a way forward without involving unions, as our future seems bleak as we don't have any advancement prospects in the fire service anymore.
Task implementation will not benefit us as firefighters and neither will a once-off 14th cheque. Lets demand our back pay, even if it means we have to do some soul searching by making sacrifices and being branded. A go-slow won't work, it is time to fight for what we were promised.
