TENEAL Fredericks, 15, from Westville Secondary School in Bethelsdorp, is the regional winner of the 42nd annual letter writing competition, hosted by the South African Post Office.
Eastern Cape Post Office spokeswoman Cheryl Kemp said the general feedback on Fredericks's letter was that it was a very nice read.
"It was a great letter. She definitely stuck to the topic," she said.
The task was to write a letter to someone about why water was such a precious resource.
"I wrote it at three in the morning. That's when inspiration struck me," said Fredericks.
Her letter, in which she addresses herself on how we as humankind will have to search for water in the case of a worldwide drought, will also be the provincial entrant for the national competition.
For being the Eastern Cape regional champ, she won R15000 for her school and R5000 for herself.
"I plan on helping my family out financially, but I also really want to save up for a laptop. I really want to write a children's book one day," she said.
The national winner will be announced at the end of next month and will receive R25000 for their school and R15000 for themselves.
