HEALTH MEC Sicelo Gqobana dissolved the Fort Beaufort Provincial Hospital board this week and ordered the immediate redeployment of the hospital manager following a damning report into the abuse of hospital funds.
This came after a group of "volunteer" cleaners and maintenance workers were paid R42500.
In addition, the board – whose appointment was never approved by the MEC's office – unlawfully squandered R4000 of the hospital's money on travel expenses.
Forensic investigators from the department's internal auditing and risk assurance management service found that the board was illegitimate as the members had elected themselves and were able to access hospital board funds held in two bank accounts.
