THE Hobsons will be out to defend their title, but the field looks wide open when eight Settler families settle their feuds on the cricket field in the biennial Salem six-a- side tournament tomorrow.
The 18th edition of the event is scheduled to start at 8.30am and it should be another interesting day's cricket as the cobwebs are brushed aside and pulled hamstrings become a normal occurrence.
This year sees the introduction of the Fords into the event, a team comprising largely youthful players, and they could be real contenders for the title. Sadly, the Longs are not able to field a side this year, thus giving the Fords an opportunity to demonstrate their prowess.
The Longs have been synonymous with hosts Salem Cricket Club and have always been strong contenders for the title.
Hopefully they will be back in the fold in two years.
The eight teams have been placed in two groups, with each side playing three round-robin matches. The group winners will contest the final.
The groups are: group 1: Amms, Biggses, Wilmots, Kings; group 2: Fords, Emslies, Hobsons, Brothertons.
Previous champions have been: Emslies (7 times), Hobsons (6), Wilmots (2), Kings (1), Brothertons (1).
