IN a matter of hours, one deserving Eastern Cape matric pupil will be crowned The Herald Matric of the Year, walking away with wonderful prizes that include a full undergraduate bursary from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU).
Proteas coach Russell Domingo will be the guest speaker at the gala dinner tonight at the NMMU South Campus auditorium, where winners, including category winners, will be announced.
Domingo said he wanted to motivate pupils by sharing some of the lessons he had learnt in life as well as values he had aimed to maintain.
Judges must have had a tough time selecting the single overall winner from the high-calibre finalists, who have all displayed great academic prowess and cultural achievements.
Judge Pieter Swart, of NMMU, said the competition gained stature each year and had become the pinnacle of awards for school leavers in the province. "The class of 2013 entrants was exceptionally talented and really showed that the busier you are, the more you get done," he said.
The 20 finalists each received great prizes from the event sponsors.
