A CRIME is committed every two minutes in the Eastern Cape with at least nine murders taking place every day. While serious crime rates have mostly increased across the country, life is still cheapest in the province, the latest crime statistics showed yesterday.
The Eastern Cape has for the fifth consecutive year emerged as the most murderous province in the country.
Between April last year and March, a total of 3344 cases of murder were reported – a 5.8% increase per 100000 residents from the 3278 murders the previous year.
The statistics were released by Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa and national police commissioner Riah Phiyega.
The statistics also revealed that the murder rate in South Africa increased by 0.6%.
Institute for Security Studies analyst Gareth Newham said an increase in serious and violent crime in South Africa showed that the government's approach to crime was not working.
