I WAS not surprised when I read about Christian Martin's comments about DA officials being peacocks ("Martin's DA 'peacock' comment justified", September 18).
What surprised me, rather, was the legislature's stiff and unfair sanction of Martin.
It seems as though it is only the legislature who does not know that DA officials are indeed peacocks.
This is the party that has positioned itself as that of all races. This, among others, means that racism is not part of the DA's values.
But a recently circulated racist e-mail, forwarded by suspended DA councillor Stanford Slabbert, is the latest proof that the party's officials are peacocks. It must be remembered that Slabbert is a highly acclaimed leader within the DA, and, perhaps, the contents of his contentious e-mail may be a microcosm of the values of the DA's entire leadership.
Add to this the controversial comments made by provincial DA leader Athol Trollip about Afrikaners. As time goes by, South Africans will realise the real animal that is the DA.
Martin said: "The DA purposely ensures that the Northern Areas remain filthy in order to place blame on the municipality, saying it does not care about the community, to ensure votes."
I know Martin personally and can attest to the fact that he never draws any distinction between people and values them equally. To go without a month's salary is unfair for speaking truth to power.
I suggest that consideration be given for a fundraiser to cover his salary for next month.
