DESPITE lack of corporate sponsorship, the annual Hotspurs under-17 Night Series soccer tournament continues to thrive.
Now in its 14th year, the tournament is played at the Dyke during the third-term school holidays.
Held in honour of the founders of Hotspurs, Doc Moses and Frank Hannie, the tournament kicked off yesterday with 12 teams playing in three groups.
According to tournament director Elton Hoffman, the organisers have secured several small sponsorships towards prizes.
"We are especially grateful to Ward 7 councillor Chris Roberts for his assistance. Without him we would not be able to provide the main prize – a set of jerseys to each of the finalists," Hoffman said.
Remarkably, the hosts have won the competition eight times.
