HERITAGE Day does not belong to the ANC but to all South Africans.
So said historian and former anti-apartheid activist Afrika Mqoko. He was speaking at a debate titled "What does heritage mean to you as a young person?" at the Nangoza Jebe Hall in New Brighton yesterday.
The debate, led by KQFM DJ Percy Lamani, was centred on celebrating heritage sites in Nelson Mandela Bay.
Mqoko said South Africa's heritage had been around longer than the ruling party. He made mention of the SS Mendi that in 1917 was transporting 823 members of the South African Native Labour Corps to France when it sank.
"From New Brighton to Motherwell to Uitenhage, there are heritage sites everywhere in this city but some people don't even know about them."
