VISION4 Women is calling for nominations for its second Beyond the Balance Sheet programme which honours businesswomen in the Nelson Mandela Metro who go beyond their work to make a difference in their communities.
The Walmer-based empowerment initiative started the awards programme last year and it was so well received it has expanded it for 2013.
Award co-ordinator Gigi Mesani said the awards were to recognise "women in the workplace who have expanded their definition of success from making money to making a difference".
"Our main reason will always be honouring the women who are making the difference in our communities," Mesani said, mentioning a few of the recipients from last year's programme, such as Noxulo Sume – also known as Mama Jeya – and Lelethu "PoeticSoul" Mahambehlala.
"Mrs Jeya, who won the small business award, was very encouraged to be honoured at home by her own people. She said she is always honoured by people from other countries.
"All the women who were our finalists felt very special and encouraged that someone was noticing what they were doing out of love and passion without gain," said Mesani.
Vision4 Women also runs a girls mentoring programme for matriculants from impoverished areas: "Our Vision4 young women were also motivated to be involved in such an event where they were honoured among people who are the role models of the society. The event was such an inspiration from the judges to everyone who participated in it."
Vision4 Women is looking for women who are: a visionary, a leader who brings out the best in others, a role model who makes a difference to their society, whose business or organisation promotes people-centred development around the Eastern Cape.
"Please take time and nominate them for the Beyond the Balance Sheet Awards," urged Mesani.
Nominations close on October 18. The finalists will be interviewed the following week and the winners will be announced at a gala dinner on Saturday November 23 at Nangoza Jebe Hall.
Categories include: SME (18-35, and 35-plus), education, health and welfare, sport, NGO (18-35, and 35-plus), arts and culture, and faith- based organisation.
