PETTY crimes are on the rise in Nelson Mandela Bay and police are urging residents to be more vigilant.
The most common crime is the theft of cellphones.
Police spokesman Captain Andre Beetge said people turned themselves into victims by not paying attention to their surroundings.
"Residents need to be more aware. We have seen a spike in the number of petty thefts during the past month."
Beetge said criminals were targeting anyone who looked vulnerable.
