THE four young men accused of gang-raping and then robbing a young student in Motherwell in 2009 were found guilty by the Port Elizabeth High Court yesterday.
Judge President Themba Sangoni found there was sufficient evidence against the four men, who are all in their 20s, to convict them on the charge of rape. However, he changed the charge of aggravated robbery to one of just robbery.
The men were arrested in connection with the rape of the victim, who at the time was a 21-year-old Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University student. The incident occurred on March 8 2009 near Nyara Street in NU7, Motherwell.
The men – Thandolwethu Melile, 23, Msingathi Matana, 23, Bulelane Mange, 20, and Sinesipho Stuurman, 22 – will remain in custody while pre-sentencing reports are compiled.
