MEMBERS of Julius Malema's EFF allegedly assaulted several students at the University of South Africa's main campus in Pretoria yesterday.
Unisa Sasco chairman Solly Nkuna said the chaos erupted at the entrance to ZK Mathews Hall as Malema was addressing his supporters.
"Sasco members were singing as Malema spoke. This was disruptive, resulting in an altercation [with] EFF. Several people were assaulted. Three EFF members pointed [guns] at people to stop [them] singing," he said.
Nkuna said student representative council president Brian Mphahlele and several Nehawu members were among those assaulted.
He said EFF members had scaled the university's fence when security guards refused them entry.
Unisa spokesman Martin Ramotshela confirmed the altercation but saw no guns. Malema had been invited to a discussion on land reform. Permission for the discussion was withdrawn on Wednesday after it was learnt that it would be turned into an EFF rally. – Sipho Masombuka
