MUNICIPAL water restrictions were looming for Grahamstown and surrounding farms which used irrigation, Portia Makhanya, Eastern Cape regional head of the national Water Affairs Department, said.
She said the entire water management of Makana Municipality was to be handed over to the Amathola Water Board. A prohibition on watering gardens, irrigating farms and washing cars was on the cards.
While the Eastern Cape is dry, dams are full. Makhanya said in East London a problem with two ageing pumps meant only half the available capacity to supply Grahamstown was in effect.
