IT is so sad that South African citizens have been so desensitised to murder and robberies. The Herald front page article on Monday regarding the senseless murder of Rocco Swanepoel in Despatch refers ("Despatch attack victims bleeds to death").
Rocco attempted to defend his wife and child from this savage attack, and his reward was to be murdered by the attackers. We read the article, turn over the page and carry on with our lives as if nothing has happened.
Why? This attack and murder has caused huge trauma to his wife, Jolandie, his child who witnessed the attack, their immediate families, their friends and neighbours. We should all be outraged by this attack.
This should stay front page news until the attackers are brought to book and end up in jail. The alleged killer was arrested a couple of months ago for housebreaking and was wandering the streets again – what is going on?
Rocco would still be alive today if the police and justice system did their jobs effectively but no, the man is let loose on the law abiding South African public and an innocent person pays the price.
This is not a racial issue – it is impacting on everyone and knows no boundaries.
Evil prevails when good men do nothing! This evil will touch all of us if we do not stand up for our rights.
Deepest sympathy to the Swanepoel family.
