DESPATCH High will kick off the official cricket season by hosting a Twenty20 tournament today and tomorrow, promising fast and furious action.
The hectic nature of the game's shortest form always provides plenty of interest and the Despatch event, sponsored by Williams Hunt Uitenhage and Despatch Super Spar, is an ideal opportunity to clear away any cobwebs.
Several teams have already seen action in pre-season activities, but for many it will be their first foray on to the cricket field.
The teams have been divided into four pools, with each side playing three matches today.
The top two teams in each pool qualify for tomorrow's quarterfinals, followed by the semis at 11.30am and the final at 3pm.
The pools are: A: Williams Hunt Despatch, DF Malherbe, Winterberg, Nico Malan; B: Marlow, EP Development, Lilyfontein, Woolhope; C: Daniel Pienaar, Despatch B, Gill, Cradock; D: Framesby, Grens, David Livingstone, Uitenhage High.
Play starts at 8.15am today.
ýThere is also plenty on offer for girls' cricket this weekend, with Framesby, in conjunction with EP Cricket, hosting the Sassy six-a- side festival today and tomorrow.
The event was started last year by Gerry Smith, chairwoman of girls' cricket. Along with her experience, SA players Marizanne Kapp and Dane van Niekerk will share their views on the game.
EP girls' under-19 coach Claire Terblanche heads the coaching session this morning, assisted by the EP women's team.
Following the coaching session, teams will be split into two groups in a strength versus strength format. Matches will be played up until lunch tomorrow.
The teams taking part are: Linkside, Framesby, Strelitzia, DF Malherbe, Pearson, Bethelsdorp, St Thomas, Chatty, Mfesane, Cowan.
