THE recent tender call by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality for event management companies to run the Splash Festival will not work. This year's Splash Festival was a disaster and the company that was given the task made it even worse.
Appointing a company three days before a national event that is supposed to bring tourists was a gross mistake.
Whoever was the cause of this mistake should have been charged and fired. The municipal money was wasted and somebody must be held liable.
Currently the municipality has budgeted R1-million for a three-day event whereas the same municipality is to spent R1-million on a evening event, the Bay Stars. Can someone spot the difference?
We have tried to do jazz and failed because we are not Cape Town. We have tried to do arts festivals and failed because we are not Grahamstown.
We need to build our own event that will make people say, "I want to go there".
Next year's Splash will fail. It will be another waste of money.
It is in this respect I call upon the municipality to have an event indaba for this metro.
