FIVE friends from Pretoria will be starting a gruelling 500km journey on Wednesday to raise funds for the blue crane.
Wynand Steyn and his four friends – Gerhard du Toit, Leon Whitlock, Rietief Rossouw and Dawid de Wet – will cycle the distance from Port Elizabeth to George.
The friends wanted to use their adventure to raise awareness for the blue crane, South Africa's national bird, which is classified as vulnerable.
"We were getting so much interest, so we thought we should bring in a good cause," Steyn said.
Speaking to the Endangered Wildlife Trust, the five decided to get involved with the Save Our Cranes project.
The funds raised through the GivenGain site will help to secure a habitat for the species and fund research projects. – Pericles Anetos
