THE St Stephen's church hall in New Brighton will be renamed in honour of its longest serving leader, Reverend Douglas Mbopa, this week.
The renaming service will be officiated by Anglican Bishop Bethlehem Nopece on Friday (5pm). It will then be known as the Reverend Douglas Mbopa Memorial Hall.
Mbopa, a member of a royal Xhosa household, was rector at St Stephen's for 26 years. He was born in East London in 1911 at St Luke's Mission and attended St Matthew's College for Technical Education and St Peter's Theological School in Johannesburg. He was a delegate at the Anglican Congress in Toronto in 1963, before becoming the St Stephen's rector in the 1970s.
A spokesperson said Mbopa was instrumental in the construction of the church, the rectory and the hall and was responsible for the rise in the number of congregants over the years.
"We felt that, as a church, we need to honour this giant of faith. We have invited his grandchildren and one of his daughters-in-law to celebrate the renaming."
