WHETHER or not one of the accused was found with a firearm – linking him to two charges of murder and two charges of attempted murder – was the bone of contention during a murder trial in the Port Elizabeth High Court yesterday.
Zwalandile Matiwane, 30, Nyaniso Sikhuni, 23, and Bulelani Ngemtu, 21, all from Kwazakhele, have pleaded not guilty to two charges of murder, two charges of attempted murder and one charge of robbery with aggravated circumstances.
The accused are also charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.
According to court papers, on July 5 2008 the accused allegedly hijacked a Toyota Corolla jikileza taxi driven by Mxolisi Mafukwana.
The accused allegedly shot Mafukwana and took control of the vehicle. Another passenger who boarded the jikileza, Wele Jimmy Mantile, was also fatally wounded. Both victims died of multiple gunshot wounds to the head and chest.
