THE DA yesterday blasted teacher unions, saying they prioritised teachers' rights over those of pupils and were responsible for the crumbling education system.
DA Basic Education shadow minister Annette Lovemore and the party's provincial education shadow MEC Edmund van Vuuren, were addressing the media at the party's Havelock Street office, in Central, Port Elizabeth on their findings on the living conditions of pupils in school hostels.
Lovemore said what they found at the hostels was shameful. "The children's right to dignity is often infringed in these institutions. They are forced to live in filthy conditions, [are] unable to wash properly, receive food that is less than adequate and far from nutritious and they are exposed to unsafe conditions.
