EASTERN Cape vehicle manufacturers are working hard on showcasing their best work at the Johannesburg International Motor Show next week.
Considered the highlight of the motoring calendar, new products and strategies will be unveiled by all the top passenger and commercial vehicle manufacturers in the country at the Johannesburg Expo Centre.
The show will run from next Friday to Sunday.
The automotive lifestyle show is described as the largest international motoring event in Southern Africa and held only once every two years.
General Motors SA announced that the Chevrolet Sonic RS will be revealed as one of the stars of the show, forming part of an exclusive special vehicle twosome reveal by GMSA.
GMSA's communications officer Lunga Ntsendwana said the Sonic RS is only due for South African release in the first quarter of next year, and that the second GMSA vehicle reveal will remain secret until the motor show.
"The Sonic RS adds performance flavour to the Sonic range – the five-door hatchback features a 1.4-litre turbo-charged petrol engine with 103kW of power. A number of special detail changes separate the Sonic RS from its siblings, which include a sportier exterior look, dark-painted alloy wheels, red interior detailing and the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system," Ntsendwana said.
GMSA will also display seven of the latest Chevrolet, Opel and Isuzu products available in South Africa and some special vehicles from the US and Europe to tantalise Chevrolet and Opel fans.
Isuzu Off-Road Academy instructors will be on hand to drive visitors through the 4x4 track to showcase the sixth generation of the Isuzu KB's capability.
Exhibiting right next to GMSA, will be its Eastern Cape neighbour Volkswagen Group of South Africa with a total of 18 cars including the special edition Scirocco GTS as well as a high-tech concept car "which will provide a glimpse of the future of the Volkswagen brand".
Other than these top VWSA products, the theme of the VWSA stand will be innovation and include interactive exhibits like Think Blue touch tables, a Think Blue Photo Booth and Dynaudio Soundball, VWSA brand public relations manager Andile Dlamini said.
"The highlights on the stand will include the new Golf BlueMotion and iBeetle. The new Golf BlueMotion, which is one of the most fuel-efficient cars in its segment, is powered by a 2.0 litre new direct-injection turbo diesel engine with 81kW power output.
"The iBeetle is a special edition that is based on a full integration of the iPhone into the Beetle. The iBeetle uses a specially developed docking station and a unique app."
At the 4x4 track, VWSA will have the Touareg and Amarok double-cabs showcasing their off-road capabilities.
Mercedes-Benz South Africa will also present 18 of their latest models as well as "showcase new ground-breaking safety systems and high-end communications technology and infotainment systems at the Motor Show", MBSA communications manager Lynette Skriker said.
A definite show stopper will be the SLS AMG Black Series, which was inspired by the SLS AMG GT3 racing version.
"The SLS AMG Black Series boasts a fascinating mix of breathtaking design, outstanding driving dynamics and uncompromising lightweight construction. The AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine generates a power output of 464 kW (631 hp) at 7400 r/min and accelerates to 100km/h in 3.6 seconds. This star is sure to draw the crowds," Skriker said.
The complete range of SUVs from MBSA will also be on display to satisfy the off-road fraternity with the iconic G-Class as well as showcase a few new additions to the Mercedes-Benz SA Commercial Vehicles stable.
