MTN’s GM of business risk‚ Lily Zondo‚ has handed herself in at Sandton police station after a warrant of arrest was issued against her on Thursday over an extortion case.
Ms Zondo was allegedly implicated in the case after suspended MTN SA corporate services executive‚ Robert Madzonga‚ foiled an extortion attempt made against him.
Participating in a sting operation with the police‚ Mr Madzonga handed over a R50‚000 bribe to a man and a woman at the Maslow Hotel‚ Sandton‚ after which the two were arrested.
The pair were said to have fingered Ms Zondo as a role player in the scam.
According to sources‚ the female suspect approached Mr Madzonga in August 2013‚ claiming to be close to Ms Zondo. The male suspect claimed to be working with the National Intelligence Agency and the Hawks.
The pair are alleged to have demanded R300‚000 from Mr Madzonga to make investigations of him disappear.
The police scrutinised phones records which showed there were a significant number of calls between the accused‚ leading to the sting.
"Some one alerted her to her impending arrest and her lawyers contacted the police to arrange that she hand herself over to them. The lawyers argued she was not a risk and has a reputation to protect‚” said an insider.
Ms Zondo has accused Mr Madzonga of receiving some of the money paid to former communications minister Dina Pule’s boyfriend‚ Phosane Mngqibisa‚ as a management fee for the ICT Indaba a year ago‚ in the saga that led to Ms Pule’s resignation. © BDlive 2013
