In the line-up are a number of the university’s jazz studio students who were among 17 who auditioned for the scholarship concert earlier this month.
Six finalists were selected – Joash Soobramoney, Moeketsi Molefe, Mthokosizi Mabuza, Grant Allison, Sigqibo Ngonyama and Thoba Goba.
Nicky Bosman, of the NMMU music department, said yesterday that among the pieces which would be performed by the finalists were: There Will Never Be Another You by Harry Warren and Blues for Alice by Charlie Parker.
"When I Fall in Love by Victor Young and Footsteps by Wayne Shorter will also be performed.”
While the classical music scholarship concert has been running for many years, this is only the second jazz concert for the Bryars scholarship to be staged.
Bosman said the scholarship rewarded the students with funds to advance their music studies.
The concert is being staged at the NMMU South Campus Auditorium at 7.30pm tonight.
After the concert, three overall scholarship winners will be selected and announced.
Tickets are available at the door at R40 per adult, R20 per pensioner and R10 per student or pupil. For more information, contact Nicky on (041) 504-4235.
