HOW very sad to read a grove of ancient oak trees will be chopped down ("Rhodes 'tree- hugger' call rejected", October 18), this especially from an educational institution, Rhodes University. Whatever has happened to promoting and supporting environmental awareness for future generations?
The years that these trees have taken to reach the heights that they are should be respected by everyone.
Plant additional indigenous trees, by all means. The beginning height of these will be a maximum of three to 4m only!
As for the "alien" part, what is the difference with these as opposed to fruit, palm and all other trees?
The "tree hugger students", I support your fight the whole way. It's a great pity the older officials disrespect your generation. Again, nature loses out to development and money.
