BOTH ANC deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa – who is also deputy chairman of the National Planning Commission – and Performance Monitoring and Evaluation Minister Collins Chabane failed to show up in East London last night at what was supposed to be a round-table discussion on improving municipal performance and oversight.
The high-level discussion was planned to kick off the Provincial Local Government Strategic Indaba taking place today and tomorrow at the same venue – the International Convention Centre.
Instead, the media was informed just before the start of the event – a lavish gala dinner at which fewer than half the invited guests turned up – that Chabane had been called to parliament by President Jacob Zuma. No reason was provided for Ramaphosa's cancellation.
