THIS weekend it is the popular Festival of Racing at Fairview and the chance for everyone involved in horse racing in the Eastern Cape to show what they have got.
The last year or two have been an exciting time for Port Elizabeth racing, building up nicely to this weekend.
With the upgraded facilities, Fairview rates with the best in the country, but is also in one respect ahead of the rest – the wonderful Friendly City atmosphere that will this weekend once again make a lasting impression on visitors from outside the province.
The table is set for a real feast with some great, quality racing and some big parties.
Today's meeting at Fairview is packed with highlights and it is difficult to choose which will be the main attraction.
The official launch of the new world-class polytrack will be a historic moment. Then the main race is the Racing Association (RA) Stakes, a race that has become the breeding ground of superstars. The sport of horse racing never neglects charity and this meeting is also the East Cape Horse Care charity raceday.
Then what about that legendary RA cocktail party and auction after the races? If you survive this party, Sunday's highlight will no doubt be the running of the Betting World Algoa Cup.
What the PE racing fraternity wants to see, of course, is a local stable winning this grade three race.
There is a strong challenge coming from the Western Cape as usual and this adds to the great occasion. We want a PE winner but the race would not be the same without the support of the out of town trainers, and they deserve a drink for their efforts.
In the last eight years there has been only one PE winner and what a great atmosphere there was in the winner's circle when Surfin' USA did the business for popular Fairview trainer Jacques Strydom. It will not be easy for PE to walk away with victory again, but it wouldbe great.
