THE Patensie Rugby Stadium in the Baviaanskloof was a hive of activity at the weekend as hundreds of farmworkers gathered for the first Eastern Cape Farmworkers' Awards.
Although it delayed the start, the rain could not dampen the spirits of the more than 1000 farmworkers from 50 farms in the Gamtoos Valley.
Arriving in trucks, bakkies and private cars, the excited farmworkers spent the day playing different sports.
The awards were the brainchild of Patensie government official Amosa Mabukane, who is often approached by farmworkers about their problems.
