THE majority of children are getting a rotten education and Eastern Cape children are among the worst off by a long chalk.
A report sponsored by the Centre for Development and Education (CDE) says most South African pupils cannot read, write or compute at grade-appropriate levels, with large proportions being functionally illiterate and innumerate.
Authored by Stellenbosch University-based education researcher Nicholas Spaull, the report aims to provide an empirical overview of the quality of education in the country since 1994.
And while the rest of South Africa is performing poorly, the Eastern Cape is among the poorest performers of all.
