POLICE gunned down five heavily armed robbers during a foiled business robbery in Chevrolet Street, Markman Industrial Area, at about 9am this morning (Friday, 20).

The Tactical Response Team (TRT) had received information about the robbery and lay in wait outside the business. All five men, aged between 25 and 35, were killed when they attempted to shoot at police.

According to provincial police spokesman Brigadier Marinda Mills the TRT unit managed to confront the suspects before the robbery took place.

Six 9mm pistols were recovered on the scene as well as a white VW Jetta thought to be the getaway vehicle.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Celiwe Binta said the foiled heist sent a strong message to criminals "that we are squeezing their space to zero”.
