Stars in numbers crunch

23 May 2012

BAY Stars are still uncertain as to whether they will be awarded three points from the walkover they attained when Mighty Greens failed to arrive for their Vodacom League fixture last month.

Stars’ case will be handled by the league’s legal department as the Port Elizabeth side strives to get the crucial three points needed to keep them in the running for the title.

Stars, in third position, made a challenge for the points after Greens did not arrive for their second round league encounter. Greens could not provide a reasonable explanation for the blunder.

The home team wrote an inquiry letter to the league about the matter, but have received no response.

Stars have 54 points from 27 games and are behind second-placed Tembu Royals (28 games) by a point. They trail log-leaders Tornado, of East London, by seven points. Tornado have also played 28 matches.

If Stars are awarded the points they seek, this would reduce the points difference between Tornado and themselves to four.

Stars manager Nicholas Myataza said they had a very good case.

"We are very certain that we will automatically be awarded the three [key] points from that game because the Greens had no reason for failing to arrive for the game. We are still waiting for the league’s verdict in the case and hence our focus is on our two remaining games ... nothing else.”

The Vodacom league’s competition officer, Michael Mofokeng, acknowledged receiving an inquiry letter from the Stars.

"We’ve forwarded the letter to our legal department and we are now waiting for the outcome of the case. They only let us know the developments of their findings once the case is on the roll because we have a lot of cases that still need judgment before the end of the season. I can’t say when the Stars’ case will be finalised.”

Mofokeng said that normally the league’s cases took time, but that all teams, including Stars, would know the verdicts before their last games of the season.

"I can’t confirm whether they will be awarded the points, but our legal team will make a fair ruling.”
