ET verdict: justice system favours whites, says Cosatu

23 May 2012
The South African justice system still favoured the rich and the  white minority, Cosatu in the North West said on Wednesday (23/05/2012).

The provincial Congress of SA Trade Unions was responding to the  judgment handed down in the Ventersdorp High Court sitting on Tuesday.

A teenager was acquitted of the murder of rightwing leader Eugene Terre'Blanche in 2010.

Patrick Ndlovu was also found not guilty on the charge of attempted robbery, but was found guilty of house-breaking with the intent to steal. However, his co-accused Chris Mahlangu was convicted on all three charges.

"As Cosatu we always said that the justice system of our country  still favours the rich and the whites, that the poor are still oppressed and that the judiciary is failing to protect them,” spokesman Solly Phetoe said.

In a statement he said the union was disappointed in the judgment handed down by the court. It believed it was done without looking at all the circumstances the two found themselves in.

"As the federation in North West we are looking at the sentence and we will have to defend the farm workers; even if it means we must die, we will do so,” Phetoe said. - Sapa
