Fix crime problem

ALL the years of the Nationalist government’s cruel, unnatural, despicable policy of apartheid, there was something "broke” here and had to be "fixed”! And finally, it was, but after too many years!

Now this country, which should be great but sadly is still not, has something similarly ugly that is "broke” and needs to be "fixed”. Urgently! And that is the crime and how it is dealt with.

One always wondered how the former government, that had at the helm some intelligent, well-educated members, could have conceivably thought its policy was right, workable and sustainable. Now the new wonder is how the present government, that also has some intelligent, well-educated people, can conceivably believe that the no death penalty is workable.

Surely it is able to read and decipher the statistics of crime over the years since it came into power. So my appeal to the ANC is:

Firstly, call an immediate referendum to see what the people’s opinion is. Surely the first duty of a democratic government is to follow the citizens’ majority opinion.

Secondly, if that referendum results in a vote for the renewal of the death penalty for murder, rape, etc, the bill to reinstate it should be immediately passed for a period of 10 years and the statistics then re-examined.

The present crime position is untenable. Please "fix” what is "broke”!
