PEARSON High School pupil Sara Finestone will be jetting off to Washington, DC, next month to participate in the US leg of the Global Young Leaders Conference (GYLC).

Every year high school pupils from around the world participate in the GYLC, which lasts 13 days and is held on three different continents – North America, Europe and China.

Sara, 17, said she was excited about the speakers she would hear at the conference.

Although this year’s speakers have not yet been announced, previous year’s keynote speakers have included -- former Sierra Leonean child soldier Ishmael Beah; international charity Free The Children co-founders Marc and Craig Kielburger; and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s senior innovation adviser Alec Ross.

"I can’t wait to visit international embassies and meet with United Nations speakers,” Sara said.

She said she was also very excited about visiting New York City.

Sara said she had been told about the conference by one of her school teachers and, after researching it online, decided to apply.

She said she had always had an interest in politics and social issues.

The conference will conclude with a Global Summit simulation.
