Companies and competitors line up for Urban Run

15 June 2012
BUSINESSES get the opportunity to brand obstacles when top Port Elizabeth event The Herald Urban Run takes place on September 16.

This urban obstacle race, which covers 10.5km through the city’s historic CBD, is hosted by the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA).

It was established last year by company Zports as a means to draw people back to the CBD to witness the urban renewal which has taken place.

Despite entries having been open for just on two weeks, more than 400 have already been received.

The maximum is 1200.

Organisers say Port Elizabeth has set the benchmark for urban runs in South Africa and September’s event will see no fewer than 15 exciting and challenging urban obstacles along the route.

It starts and finishes on the Donkin Reserve and could raise as much as R100000 for charity.

Last year’s obstacle sponsors Mawethu Civils (pipe dream), Boston City Campus (ladder to success), Xtreme Projects (Hazmat obstacle) and Stormforce (Storm the Fort) have already committed to the race.

Newcomers The Herald and iStream will add exciting new obstacles, with Powerade ensuring the hydration needs of competitors are met.

"The Urban Run is a fun event, supporting good causes,” advertising and brand management company iStream executive Shereen Bartlett said. "It also showcases historical aspects of Port Elizabeth city that are not on the beaten track.

"All businesses along the route are encouraged to join us to give their full support to the event as well.”

Obstacles along the route are being constructed with the help of the Nelson Mandela Bay Scouts, which offers young people the opportunity to grow and flourish in an adventurous environment of camaraderie, fun and games while learning valuable skills along the way.

The self-paced advancement programme aims to empower Scouts with skills that help them develop into innovative leaders and active young citizens in their communities.

Local companies are invited to contact Mike Zoetmulder at Zports if they would like to sponsor and brand one or more of the obstacles at this year’s event.

Where applicable, Zports will design an obstacle which fits the sponsor’s brand and complements the Urban Run.

Over the weekend of the Urban Run, there will also be a health expo at the Donkin Reserve and potential exhibitors are asked to contact Zports on 041-484-7860.

Further information and online entry forms are available on The Herald Urban Run website www.urbanrun.co.za or from selected sports shops.
