THE dreadful condition of sports fields, especially in the townships and northern areas, has once again caused the postponement of weekend soccer fixtures.
Zwide FA, Walmer FA, the Northern Areas FA and Port Elizabeth FA had to call off their fixtures because of waterlogged fields.
The only match played at the weekend was the Pefa Premier League clash between NMMU Madibaz and Motherwell Academy at the Vista fields on Saturday. The students won 3-0 after leading 2-0 at the break.
In a midweek fixture Hearts defeated Cadbury 3-1.
Safa Nelson Mandela Bay president Mzimkulu Fina was certainly not a happy man regarding the prevailing poor state of sports fields.
"We had a meeting with the municipality about upgrading the fields. But we hear the same budget story.
"Associations like Walmer and PE North do not have any fields. Walmer, in particular, are at the mercy of the principal of the school whose fields they use. With the slightest rain they cannot use the fields.
"Whenever it rains all our LFAs are forced to postpone their fixtures and the season drags on and on. This must come to an end,” Fina said.
"I always appeal to LFAs to share their fields, but how can they when they themselves are already overstretched?” he said.
