DOCTORS and staff at Life Mercantile Hospital have come out in overwhelming support of their colleagues at the Port Elizabeth Hospital Complex, who called a press conference earlier in the week to address the staff crisis at these hospitals.
Life Mercantile Hospital specialist physician Dr Ricky Behari said in a letter yesterday addressed to the leadership of the PE Hospital Complex that his fellow doctors and staff in the private sector "fully support the doctors at Dora Nginza, Livingstone and Provincial hospitals”.
"The working conditions at these hospitals are pathetic and disgusting, and not conducive to proper and adequate patient care,” Behari wrote.
"The problem lies not with the doctors but the administration and bureaucratic bungles, which have effectively destroyed state health- care in the Eastern Cape.
"Unless conditions improve we will all take a stand in support of these doctors. Our families, friends, relatives and patients are all involved,” Behari wrote.
The letter was accompanied by a list of about 200 signatures of physicians, nurses and staff pledging their support.
