WE are at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown with our tap dance show, Off the Beaten Path. As always, we hand out pamphlets to people to promote the show.
One of our company members handed a pamphlet to a woman, telling her the adult female and adult duo world tap champions were members of the company and would be performing. She asked what nationality they were.
On his reply that they were South African, she said she didn’t believe it! So sad that South Africans have such little faith in the successes of their countrymen.
The Tap World Championships took place in Germany in December last year, and yes, South Africa came up trumps for the first time, among more than 20 countries. Robynne Versfeld won the adult female title and with Jean-Jacques le Roux the adult duo.
The South African flag stood high and our national anthem was played.
I was so upset when I was told about the woman’s reaction. As a South African and a patriot, I believe we can hold our heads up in many spheres and are world leaders in many arenas, and perhaps it’s time that the general public knows it too!
