AMONG them, they have played with some of Africa’s top musicians.
Now, Port Elizabeth afro-fusion band Black South Easter is getting ready to launch their debut album, In Waves, this weekend.
The 12-track album was released last month and guitarist Dan Boshoff promised fans a diverse range of music made of South African sounds that included rock, reggae and funk modern.
Their single, Indoda, is already enjoying airplay on radio stations.
"It took us two years to record the album because we wanted to give our fans something that is unique and also something that they could relate to. We took longer because we also had to record a demo before recording the album,” he said.
Black South Easter – taking their name from "the uplifting and revitalising winds that blow across the Cape Peninsula” – was formed in early 2010 and is made up of an electric mix of five diverse and experienced musicians.
Boshoff is joined by lead vocalist Nhoza Sitsholwana, whose career started as backup singer for afro-jazz singer Simphiwe Dana eight years ago.
Veteran musician Jimi Curve plays bass guitar and is also the band’s producer.
Maputo-born drummer Jerry Mbowa has toured nationally and internationally for the past 20 years and has also shared the stage with the likes of McCoy Mrubata and Winston Mankunku. He brings a fusion of rhythms to the music as he mixes subtle African rhythms with rock and dance patterns.
Rounding up the band is saxophonist Vaughn Tromp who also has been touring the world extensively over the past few years and counts the late artists Lucky Dube and Gito Baloi among some of the musicians he has played with.
The launch takes place at Warmer Gardens on Saturday.
