I HAVE been helping out at a few NGOs and I have come across an important group that has all been but forgotten about. It is the Nkosinathi Foundation for the blind, which cares for the partially sighted and blind in the Eastern Cape.
It has been relying mainly on Lotto for funds as it has not been able to get a fundraiser to help out and it receives a lot of donations in non-monetary forms too. I have witnessed first-hand the amazing work it does for the blind and partially sighted.
It helps train young children who are born blind or become blind early on in life. This is amazing to see as the staff work so well with them and really make them want to live life again. They also have regular groups with adults who also need help. Some don’t get grants and they help feed them.
It is so unfortunate to see such an amazing organisation that is doing great work in the Bay now facing closure. It has been told that Lotto funds will not be forthcoming anymore and therefore has to close its doors.
A lot of amazing people are going to be jobless soon, and many many more blind and partially sighted folk are going to be left in the dark without a helping hand. So I plead with anyone willing and able to help, please contact the Nkosinathi Foundation in Port Elizabeth and pledge your support for such a needed NGO in the city.
