Gran's money taken from account

20 July 2012

A NELSON Mandela Bay grandmother is fighting to find out how R37000 mysteriously disappeared from her bank account.

Her bank has acknowledged receiving the money from Phumla Mayeza-Ndlendle in 2004. However, they said they did not know who had withdrawn it because they only kept records for five years before destroying them.

Mayeza-Ndlendle, 57, of Humewood, received the lump sum after resigning from the Education Department. The money was deposited into a friend’s investment account on July 5 2004. He transferred it into Mayeza-Ndlendle’s account the following day but had no signing powers, she said.

But on July 6 2004 someone withdrew the money and she only discovered this last August when checking on her investment. "I got the shock of my life. Officials said the account was closed in 2005.”
