DESPITE being outscored by two tries to one, home side Andrew Rabie deserved their 16-10 win over Newton Tech at the weekend.
It was an entertaining game in which Rabie flyhalf Sherwin Slater showed excellent skills and was the best player on the field.
He kicked a drop goal and a conversion. Fullback Ruan van der Kuil added two penalties. Rabie scrumhalf Bradley Meyer also had a good game.
Flank Anda Bongoza scored a try after sustained pressure on Newton’s tryline.
Newton’s tries came from centre Regan Akkerman and fullback Sandro Felix.
Brandwag v Despatch
BRANDWAG beat neighbours Despatch 31-10
after leading 12-3 at halftime in Uitenhage on Saturday. Brandwag scored five tries to one on their way to victory.
For Brandwag, flanker Elandré Crouse and wing Nicholas Lourens both scored two tries. Eighthman Ivan-John du Preez scored the other try .
Flyhalf Malcolm Jaer, scrumhalf Mario Mowers and loosehead Matthew Moore each succeeded with a conversion for Brandwag. Flanker Jonty Fourie scored Despatch’s only try shortly after an interception deep in Brandwag’s half.
Brandwag also won the other five games on the day to complete a white- wash against neighbouring Despatch.
Otto v DFM
OTTO du Plessis scored a dramatic last-minute 24-21 (halftime 10-6) victory over DF Malherbe in their schools match in Algoa Park at the weekend.
The game was played in heavy under- foot conditions after the recent rain.
DFM lost their flyhalf Ruan van den Heever, fullback Marnus Dunn as well as the replacement flyhalf due to injuries.
These injuries resulted in a reshuffled backline for DFM which did not help their cause although they fought on bravely.
Woodridge v Kirkwood
WOODRIDGE defeated Kirkwood 22-0 (halftime 15-0) in a game which featured some good running rugby in Thornhill.
Woodridge’s first half tries came from centre Tiago Rideiro and left wing Mbulelo Bubaza. Flyhalf Gamal Wrede kicked one of the conversions and then landed a penalty to take the teams into the break.
The only points of the second half came via a superb individual try by scrumhalf Nicholas Smith who scored after a sniping blindside run. Kirkwood tried hard in the second half but failed to score points.
Nico Malan v VP
NICO Malan were too strong for Victoria Park, winning all their age group matches in Humansdorp.
The school was supremely impressive in the first team clash winning by a massive margin of 53-0.
