EASTERN Cape equestrian prodigy Tyla Radermacher clinched the South African title at the Pony Rider South African Championships at the Durban Shongweni Club.
With the show-jumping classes ranging from 70cm to 1.15m, there was a showcase of new talent, rising stars and seasoned riders from all over South Africa.
Tyla, 14, made the best of months of hard work, dedication and weekends sacrificed to ride to victory on her pony, Ebb & Flow’s Why Not.
"Tyla’s big-match temperament is what enabled her to deliver double clear rounds on both of her ponies,” coach Anthony Kay said.
The Eastern Cape also won the Pony Rider Team Championships, with KwaZulu-Natal placing second, Gauteng third, Western Province fourth and Mpumalanga fifth.
"Our province is currently home to the top pony rider, Tyla Radermacher; the top junior rider, AJ Radermacher [Tyla’s brother], and two-times Avis Derby winner, Jade Hooke,” Kay said.
The Eastern Cape has also produced top show jumper Andre Ferreira, who set the world long jump record in 1975, and is home to veteran dealer Diane Snodgrass-Botes, who is responsible for selling a host of champion horses across South Africa.
