Blackpool crowned 2012 Mayoral Cup champions

A THRILLING penalty shoot-out saw Blackpool crowned the Safa-NMB Mayoral Cup champions at the NU2 Stadium in Motherwell on Saturday.

The northern areas outfit defeated Zwifa Marina Sea Salt Premier League champions Shining Stars 3-1. The teams were tied at 2-2 at the end of regulation time.

The competition started at district level three months ago with the winner of each of the 12 affiliates pocketing R5000 in cash, a floating trophy, medals and a set of playing kit.

On Saturday, Blackpool pocketed R30000 while Stars collected R20000.

In the final Stars took the initiative from the kick-off and deserved the 2-1 lead at the break. However a determined Blackpool drew level before the final whistle. Johneton Pokbas and Nico Bailey scored on either side of the break for the champions.

The match went straight into the penalty shoot-out. Blackpool goalkeeper Leroy Goliath was the hero as he stopped three penalties. He was named goalkeeper of the tournament.

Stars striker Anele Ntile won both the highest goal scorer and player of the tournament awards.

Earlier, New Brighton Masters beat Sparks in the Legends category to win R10000. Sparks pocketed R7000.

In the women’s final, Manchester Babes beat Continental Express 2-1 and took home R20000 while Express picked up R10000.



FOLLOWING their tough Mayoral Cup final on Saturday, Blackpool were leg-weary against Fairview Rovers in a Nafa Premier League match at Malabar 2 yesterday.

They played to a goalless draw.

On the neighbouring field Wolves beat Shamrocks 2-0.

Chatty United and Park United shared the spoils with a 1-1 draw at Finnis 1.

All the Pefa Premier League matches, bar one, were washed out on Friday and Saturday.

In the only match that was played on Saturday Forresters beat Squares 5-3 at the Diaz Club field.
