I’M glad I have never got sucked into the "67 minutes for Mandela” hype.
It is more about making those involved feel better about themselves and promoting their image in the media than anything else. There are exceptions, and really good and worthwhile deeds are done by some do-gooders, but they are probably by far a small minority of those who participated.
My viewpoint was once more strengthened by the following press report: "Former US president Bill Clinton donated a container filled with books to one of South Africa’s poorest schools – where 228 pupils share three classrooms and less than 30 desks – in Qunu, the home village of struggle icon Nelson Mandela. NoMoscow Senior Primary School has previously been described as close to Madiba’s heart and is one of 1093 schools in the Eastern Cape that has an acute shortage of desks and chairs.”
What a disgrace on Mandela’s doorstep.
