A NELSON Mandela Bay primary school under-13 boys’ soccer team is planning to shine at the provincial Nestle Milo Champions knockout tournament in Queenstown tomorrow.
Imbasa Primary School will compete against teams from seven other districts in their quest for provincial glory. The Motherwell school team were crowned PE champions after defeating New Brighton champions Jarvis Gqamlana 2-1 in the inter-zonal finals.
A win at the provincial tournament will see them represent the Eastern Cape at the national finals in Johannesburg next month.
Team manager Selby Madikane said the players were proud to reach the provincial finals of the tournament.
"We’ve learnt from last year’s mistakes when we were knocked out in the zonal stages,” Madikane said. "We started preparing for this tournament as early as possible and after we were crowned the zonal champs I knew these boys were going to the provincial stage.”
Acting principal Tame Sisa said he was proud of the school’s team.
"I believe they will make our school proud and bring the provincial trophy to the city,” Sisa said. Midfielder Luntu Tyombo, 12, said that he was proud of his teammates.
"We will do our best to win the cup and proceed to the national stage,” he said.
Prize money for the winning school in the championship final is R150 000.
"We wish the best of luck to all the participating schools in the Eastern Cape this weekend,” SA Schools’ Football Association president Mandla Mazibuko, said.
