Westering debaters prevail

07 August 2012
WESTERING High School’s debating fundis showed great enthusiasm when they won the regional environmental debate at the KwaDwesi Community Centre.

Westering competed in the high school category with climate change as the main theme.

The teacher in charge of the school’s debating society, Kerri de Wet, said they had won R20000.

"At first it was a daunting task as we did not know what to expect. but it was a great experience for our pupils.”

Westering competed against 17 other schools in the regional round in Nelson Mandela Bay and will now go on to compete in the provincial section of the environment awards in East London later this year.

They will donate the prize money to the Sinethemba Children’s Care Centre.

"This kind of initiative shows that our government and education department really do care about the community. In disadvantaged communities, these are the situations people face,” De Wet said.

Morningside High School finished in second place in the high school category and Loyiso Senior Secondary School third.

Dumani Primary School won the primary school section with Kabega Primary School second and Vukani Bantu Primary School third.
