Bay pupil in top 20 matrics

16 August 2012
A PORT Elizabeth matric pupil has reached the top 20 of Stellenbosch University’s Matriculant of the Year competition.

If chosen as one of the top five, Victoria Park High School headboy Tilden Plaatjies will study actuarial science – a discipline that applies mathematical and statistical methods to assess risk in the insurance and finance industries. His back-up field is chartered accounting.

"My greatest achievement is to be in the position I am in now and I hope not to fall by the wayside,” Plaatjies said.

"I would prefer to go to either Stellenbosch or the University of Cape Town.”

The 18-year-old boasts a creditable list of achievements. He is the vice-president of interact, president of the student aid committee and he was runner-up in the regional toastmasters. - Liam May
